Masahiro Tanaka is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher who plays for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball’s (NPB) Pacific League.

Tanaka was born on November 1, 1988, in Itami, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. His parents are Masanori and Ikuyo Tanaka. He has two younger sisters, Moe and Risa. Tanaka began playing baseball when he was in elementary school. He attended Komazawa University Tomakomai High School, where he played baseball and was scouted by NPB teams.

Tanaka was drafted by the Eagles in the first round of the 2006 NPB draft. He made his NPB debut in 2007 and won the Pacific League Rookie of the Year Award. He helped the Eagles win the 2013 Japan Series and was named the Series MVP. After the 2013 season, Tanaka was posted by the Eagles and signed a seven-year, $155 million contract with the Yankees.

Tanaka made his MLB debut in 2014 and was named an All-Star. He finished the season with a record of 13–5 and an ERA of 2.77. In 2015, he was limited to 22 starts due to injury, but still finished with a record of 12–7 and an ERA of 3.51. He rebounded in 2016, starting 31 games and posting a record of 14–4 with an ERA of 3.07.

Tanaka had a down year in 2017, going 13–12 with an ERA of 4.74. He rebounded in 2018, going 12–6 with an ERA of 3.75. He has continued to be a solid starter for the Yankees, posting a record of 11–9 with an ERA of 4.45 in 2019.

Tanaka is married to Mai Satoda, a Japanese singer. The couple has two daughters, Mia and Emi.

Masahiro Tanaka has a career record of 79-46 with an ERA of 3.74. He has won two Japan Series titles and has been named to two MLB All-Star teams.
