Luis Suárez is a Uruguayan professional footballer who plays as a striker for Spanish club Barcelona and the Uruguay national team.
Born on 24 January 1987 in Salto, Uruguay, Suárez began his career as a youth player for local club Nacional in 2003. He moved to Dutch club Groningen in 2006, where he made his professional debut, and then to Ajax in 2007. He won his first major trophy in 2010–11, when Ajax won the KNVB Cup. In the 2011–12 season, he was Ajax’s top scorer with 35 goals in 33 games, winning the Dutch Golden Boot.
In January 2013, Suárez transferred to Liverpool for £22.8 million (€26.5 million). During his time at Liverpool, he won the League Cup in 2012–13 and was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year in 2013–14. He also came close to winning the Premier League title in 2013–14, but Liverpool finished second behind Manchester City. In 2014, he was named in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team as one of the best 11 players at the tournament.
In July 2014, Suárez moved to Barcelona for a fee of £75 million (€82.3 million), making him one of the most expensive players in football history. In his first season at Barcelona, he won the treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League, and was named the La Liga Player of the Year. He followed this up by winning the double of La Liga and the Copa del Rey in his second season.
In 2016, he helped Barcelona win a historic second consecutive treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. He also won the European Golden Shoe for his 39 goals in La Liga that season. In 2017, he won his third La Liga title with Barcelona.
