Larry Sloman (born November 19, 1945) is an American writer, journalist, and biographer. He is best known for his work with Rolling Stone magazine, where he served as editor from 1974 to 1977, and for his collaborations with Howard Stern and Billy Joel.
Sloman was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He was raised in the Crown Heights neighborhood and attended public schools. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison on a journalism scholarship. He dropped out after one semester and returned to New York City, where he began his career as a freelance writer.
In the early 1970s, Sloman began contributing to Rolling Stone magazine. He was hired as an editor in 1974 and served in that role for three years. During his tenure at Rolling Stone, Sloman worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. He also wrote articles on politics, sports, and popular culture.
In 1977, Sloman left Rolling Stone to pursue a career as a freelance writer. He has since written for a variety of publications, including Playboy, Esquire, and The New York Times. He has also authored or co-authored several books, including Reefer Madness: The History of Marijuana in America (1979), Turn the Other Way: The Story of AIDS Activist Larry Kramer (1986), and Rat Pack Confidential: Frank, Dean, Sammy, Peter, Joey and the Last Great Show Biz Party (1998).
Sloman has been married three times and has two daughters. He currently resides in New York City.
