Kevin Richardson was born on October 3, 1971, in Lexington, Kentucky. He is the youngest of three children. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a schoolteacher. Richardson was a shy child and was often teased by his siblings. He began singing in his church choir when he was five years old. When he was eight, his family moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Richardson attended high school at Louisville Male High School. He was a member of the school choir and the drama club. After graduation, he attended the University of Kentucky, where he studied theater. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1993.

Richardson’s acting career began in regional theater. He appeared in productions of “The Fantasticks” and “The Wizard of Oz.” He also had roles in several independent films. In 1997, Richardson moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television. He had guest roles on the television shows “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.” He also appeared in the films “As Good as It Gets” and “The Brady Bunch Movie.”
In 1999, Richardson was cast as Brian Kinney on the Showtime series “Queer as Folk.” The show ran for five seasons and ended in 2005. Richardson received critical acclaim for his performance on the show. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama in 2004.
After “Queer as Folk” ended, Richardson had guest roles on the television shows “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” He also appeared in the films “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Richardson is married to Kristen Johnston. They have two children together.
