Erik studied law at Dover College and Jesus College, Cambridge, and later trained for acting at RADA. During World War II, he served as a sergeant with the Eighth Army in Italy and Egypt. From the mid-1930's, he appeared primarily on television, often in bumbling or owlish roles. He was seen to best effect in recurring roles as Mr. Smith in Please Sir! (1968) and as Co-Ordinator Engin in "The Deadly Assassin" episodes of Doctor Who (1963). |
Julius Albert Krug was born on August 15, 1822, in Düsseldorf, Germany. His parents were Heinrich and Sophia Krug. He had four siblings: Heinrich, Sophia, Wilhelm, and Karl. Krug received his early education at the Düsseldorf Gymnasium. He then studied law at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. After graduation, he worked as a lawyer in Düsseldorf.
In 1848, Krug became involved in the Revolution of 1848. He was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly and the Prussian National Assembly. In 1849, he was elected to the Constituent Assembly of the German Confederation. He served as Minister of Finance in the short-lived Provisional Government of 1848-49.
After the failure of the Revolution, Krug emigrated to the United States. He settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he worked as a lawyer and journalist. In 1852, he married Mathilde Franziska Anneke. They had six children: Julius, Wilhelm, Karl, Heinrich, Sophia, and Mathilde.
Krug served as a delegate to the Wisconsin Constitutional Convention in 1848. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate from 1848 to 1850. He served as President pro tempore of the Senate in 1850. In 1851, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. He served as Governor of Wisconsin from 1852 to 1856.
As Governor, Krug advocated for the construction of a transcontinental railroad through Wisconsin. He also supported the creation of a state university and the establishment of a state bank. He was a leading opponent of slavery and helped to keep Wisconsin in the Union during the Civil War.
After leaving office, Krug returned to his law practice in Milwaukee. He also served as a trustee of the University of Wisconsin and as a regent of the University of Wisconsin System. In 1873, he was appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Timothy O. Howe. He served in the Senate until his death on March 8, 1874.
Krug was an able legislator and an important figure in early Wisconsin history. He helped to shape the state’s economic and educational policies. He was a strong opponent of slavery and a supporter of the Union during the Civil War.
