John Paul Jones is a Scottish musician and record producer, best known for his work with the rock band Led Zeppelin. A versatile musician, Jones also plays bass guitar, keyboards, and mandolin. He was born John Baldwin on January 3, 1946, in Sidcup, Kent, England. His father, Joseph Baldwin, was a jazz pianist, and his mother, Louise (née Jones), was a singer. Jones began playing piano at age six and took up the violin at age 10. He attended Christ’s College, Finchley, where he studied music. He later studied composition and orchestration at the Royal Academy of Music.
Jones began his professional career as a session musician in London, playing on records by artists such as the Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, and the Who. He also played on the soundtracks of several films, including A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Help! (1965). In 1966, he joined the newly formed rock band Led Zeppelin. With Led Zeppelin, Jones helped create some of the most iconic rock songs of all time, including “Stairway to Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Love.” The band’s self-titled debut album (1969) is widely considered one of the greatest rock albums ever made.
Led Zeppelin achieved great commercial and critical success throughout the 1970s. Jones continued to work as a producer during this time, working on albums by artists such as the Rolling Stones and Peter Gabriel. Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 following the death of drummer John Bonham. Jones subsequently worked with a number of different artists, including David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, and Dolly Parton. He also formed the band Them Crooked Vultures with Josh Homme and Dave Grohl in 2009.
Jones has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once as a member of Led Zeppelin in 1995, and again as a solo artist in 2020. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours. He has an estimated net worth of $250 million.
