John P. Coale is an American lawyer and environmental activist. He is the co-founder of the law firm Coale & Davenport, P.C. and the co-founder of the environmental group Greenpeace USA.
Coale was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 28, 1941. His parents were John P. Coale Sr., a lawyer, and Mary Coale, a homemaker. He has two sisters, Mary and Elizabeth. Coale was educated at the Gilman School, a private preparatory school in Baltimore, and at Princeton University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1963. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1966.
Coale began his legal career as an associate at the Washington, D.C. law firm of Covington & Burling. He then served as a law clerk to Judge J. Skelly Wright of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1968, Coale co-founded the law firm of Coale & Davenport, P.C. with his former Covington & Burling colleague William Davenport. The firm specialized in environmental law and litigation.
In 1971, Coale co-founded Greenpeace USA, an environmental activist group, with David McTaggart. Greenpeace USA was a spin-off of the original Greenpeace Foundation, which had been founded in Vancouver, Canada, in 1970. Coale served as general counsel for Greenpeace USA from 1971 to 1973.
In 1973, Coale left Greenpeace USA to return to his law practice. He continued to represent environmental groups in litigation, including the Sierra Club and the National Wildlife Federation. In the 1980s, he also represented victims of the Bhopal disaster in India in their lawsuit against Union Carbide Corporation.
In addition to his law practice, Coale has been active in Democratic Party politics. He was a fundraiser for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign in 1976 and for Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992. He also served as a member of Clinton’s transition team after Clinton’s election in 1992.
Coale has been married three times. His first wife was Patricia Ann Gorman, whom he married in 1966. They had two children together before divorcing in 1974. His second wife was Frances Smith, whom he married in 1977. They had one child together before divorcing in 1987. His third wife is Lisa Blue, whom he married in 1992.
