John Ashton is an English actor, best known for his roles in the Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run films. He was born on February 22, 1948 in London, England, to a working-class family. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker. He has two older sisters. Ashton was educated at a local comprehensive school. He began his career as a stage actor, appearing in various repertory productions.
He made his film debut in the 1981 film, The First Great Train Robbery. He has since appeared in over 50 films and television shows. Some of his notable roles include Detective Sergeant Taggart in the Beverly Hills Cop films, Jonathan Mardukas in Midnight Run, and Harry Doyle in the Major League films. He has also appeared in such films as The Italian Job, The Terminator, Wall Street, and True Romance. In recent years, he has appeared in the television series, Ray Donovan and The Last Ship.
Ashton is divorced from his first wife, actress Leslie Stefanson. He has two daughters from his second marriage, to actress Kym Malin.
