Joely Richardson is an English actress. She was born on 9 January 1965 in Marylebone, London, the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. She has two sisters, Natasha and Carlo, and a brother, Carlo. Her early education was at a girls’ school in London. She later attended the Central School of Speech and Drama.

Richardson’s film debut was in 1977, when she played a small role in The Charge of the Light Brigade. She subsequently appeared in several films with her parents, including The Bostonians (1984), Wetherby (1985), and Hotel du Lac (1986). She also appeared in The Handmaid’s Tale (1990), Patriot Games (1992), and Nell (1994).

Richardson won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Movie for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I in the miniseries Elizabeth I (2005). She has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards, for her performances in the miniseries The Lost Prince (2003) and the made-for-television movie Wallis & Edward (2005).

Richardson has been married twice. Her first husband was actor Tim Bevan, with whom she has two daughters, Daisy and Lily. She is currently married to director Robert Fox.
