Joan Lindsay was born in Melbourne, Australia, on April 18, 1896. Her parents were both from wealthy families; her father was a barrister and her mother was the daughter of a successful businessman. Joan was the eldest of three children; her sister, Dora, was born two years after her, and her brother, Richard, was born four years after her. Joan was educated at home by a governess until she was eight years old, when she was sent to a boarding school in England. She returned to Australia in 1910, and finished her schooling at a private school in Melbourne.
Joan began writing stories and poems when she was a child, and had her first poem published when she was 14. After finishing school, she worked as a journalist for a few years before marrying Ronald Lindsay, a barrister, in 1917. The Lindsays had two children: Penelope, who was born in 1918, and James, who was born in 1920.
In 1923, Joan published her first novel, These Are the Days, which was followed by Time Without Clocks in 1925. She also wrote a number of short stories, which were collected in two volumes: The Cuckoo in the Nest (1926) and The Witch with the Silver Locket (1928).
In 1929, Joan and her family moved to England, where she continued to write. Her most famous novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock, was published in 1967. The book was made into a successful film by director Peter Weir in 1975.
Joan Lindsay died in London on December 26, 1984, at the age of 88.
