Jeremiah Collins was born on October 1, 1824, in Salem, Massachusetts. His parents were both of Irish descent. Jeremiah was the oldest of seven children. His early education took place in Salem public schools. Jeremiah’s father died when he was just sixteen, and he was forced to leave school to help support his family.
Jeremiah began his career working as a clerk in a Salem shipping firm. He later went into business for himself, opening a successful shipping company. Jeremiah’s business acumen made him a wealthy man. He was also an active philanthropist, donating money to various causes.
In 1849, Jeremiah married Elizabeth Proctor, the daughter of a Salem merchant. The couple had four children together. Elizabeth died in 1855.
In 1856, Jeremiah married again, this time to Abigail Williams, the daughter of a wealthy Boston family. The couple had two children together.
Jeremiah’s first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1855. His second wife, Abigail, died in 1882. Jeremiah never remarried.
Jeremiah Collins died on January 3, 1904, at the age of 79.
