Jennifer Grey is an American actress. She is known for her roles in the 1980s films Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Dirty Dancing, the latter for which she earned a Golden Globe Award nomination. She also starred in the 1990s television series It’s Like, You Know… and in the 2010s made several guest appearances on the ABC sitcom Modern Family.

Grey was born on March 26, 1960, in New York City, the daughter of Academy Award–winning actor Joel Grey and former actress/singer Jo Wilder. Grey’s paternal grandfather was Jewish and her paternal grandmother was of Romanian Jewish descent. Her parents divorced when she was three years old and she was raised by her mother on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

As a child, Grey performed with the New York City Ballet. She made her screen debut in 1974, appearing in an episode of the ABC soap opera Baretta. In 1977, she starred in the short-lived sitcom Jennifer Slept Here, and had a recurring role as Mindy Cohn’s spoiled little sister on the NBC sitcom The Facts of Life from 1980 to 1984.

In 1984, Grey landed her breakout role as Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend, Sloane Peterson, in John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The following year, she starred as Baby Houseman in Emile Ardolino’s Dirty Dancing, opposite Patrick Swayze. The film was a box office hit, grossing over $214 million worldwide, and catapulted Grey to stardom. She subsequently earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

In 1988, Grey starred in Red Dawn with Charlie Sheen and Patrick Swayze. The following year, she starred in the romantic comedy Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a sequel to Dirty Dancing. The film was a critical and commercial failure, grossing only $11 million against its $15 million budget.

In 2001, Grey made her Broadway debut in the revival of The Sunshine Boys opposite George Burns. The following year, she starred in the Lifetime television film It’s Showtime! with Jackie Gleason. In 2003, she guest-starred in an episode of the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter.

From 2009 to 2010, Grey had a recurring role as herself on the ABC sitcom Modern Family. In 2012, she competed in the eleventh season of the ABC reality television series Dancing with the Stars and finished in second place.

Grey has been married twice. Her first husband was actor George Hamilton, whom she married in July 1982. The couple divorced in February 1989. Her second husband is actor Clark Gregg, whom she married in July 2001. They have one child together, a daughter named Stella Gregg, born December 3, 2001.

Quotes

#Quote
1On the death of Patrick Swayze, she stated, "When I think of him, I think of being in his arms when we were kids, dancing, practicing the lift in the freezing lake, having a blast doing this tiny little movie we thought no one would ever see. He was a real cowboy with a tender heart. Which is why it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified. Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace. My heart goes out to his wife and childhood sweetheart, Lisa Niemi, to his mom, Patsy Swayze, and to the whole family.
