Pilson was born on March 21, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a music teacher. Pilson began playing the bass guitar when he was eleven years old. He attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied music theory and composition.
Pilson’s first professional gig was with the band Dio in 1982. He played on the band’s albums Holy Diver and Last in Line. He left Dio in 1989 to join Dokken. Pilson has played on all of Dokken’s studio albums since Back for the Attack. He also played on Lynch Mob’s album Wicked Sensation.
Pilson has been married twice. His first marriage was to Julie Pilson, with whom he has two daughters. His second marriage is to Lisa Pilson, with whom he has one son.
