Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Jay Karnes was the middle child of three boys. His father was a high school guidance counselor and his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Jay Karnes was a gifted athlete, playing both football and baseball in high school. He was also an accomplished musician, playing the piano and singing in the school choir.
After high school, Jay Karnes attended the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship. He played for the Cornhuskers for two years before an injury ended his career. Jay Karnes then transferred to UCLA, where he earned a degree in theater arts.
Jay Karnes began his acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in guest roles on television shows such as L.A. Law and Picket Fences. His big break came in 2002 when he was cast as Dutch Wagenbach on The Shield. The show was a critical and commercial success, and Jay Karnes earned praise for his performance.
