Jan Smithers was born on April 12, 1949, in North Hollywood, California, the United States to parents, Muriel and William Smithers. She has two siblings, Bill and Nancy. Smithers attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California and later graduated from there in 1967. After high school, she attended San Fernando Valley State College where she majored in art.

Smithers began her acting career in the early 1970s with guest roles on various television shows such as “The Odd Couple,” “Love, American Style,” and “The Partridge Family.” In 1974, she landed her first major role as the character, Bailey Quarters, on the CBS sitcom, “WKRP in Cincinnati.” She played the role for four seasons until the show ended in 1982.

After “WKRP in Cincinnati,” Smithers had guest roles on several television shows such as “Cheers,” “Magnum P.I.,” and “Murder, She Wrote.” In 1986, she starred in the short-lived CBS sitcom, “The Popcorn Kid.” In the 1990s, she had guest roles on the television shows “L.A. Law,” “Murphy Brown,” and “Friends.”

From 2000 to 2001, Smithers starred in the CBS drama, “Judging Amy” as the character, Maxine Gray. In 2004, she had a recurring role on the ABC soap opera, “General Hospital.” In recent years, she has had guest roles on the television shows “NCIS,” “CSI: Miami,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Jan Smithers has been married three times. Her first husband was actor Richard Gilliland whom she married in 1977. The couple had one child together before divorcing in 1981. Her second husband was actor James Brolin whom she married in 1986. The couple had two children together before divorcing in 1995. Her third husband is actor/producer Kevin Tighe whom she married in 2001.
