James J. Braddock was born on June 7, 1905, in New York City. His parents were Irish immigrants who had come to the United States in the late 1800s. Braddock had four siblings. He dropped out of high school in order to help support his family during the Great Depression.
Braddock began his boxing career in 1926. He fought mostly small-time matches and had little success. In 1934, he was given a chance to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world. He lost that match, but his career began to take off after that.
Braddock won the heavyweight championship of the world in 1935, when he defeated Max Baer in a 15-round decision. He held the title for two years before losing it to Joe Louis in a first-round knockout.
After his boxing career ended, Braddock worked as a referee and a boxing commentator. He also appeared in several films, including “The Set-Up” (1949) and “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956).
