James Callis is an English actor, best known for his roles as Dr. Gaius Baltar on the Sci-Fi Channel television series Battlestar Galactica and as Bridget Jones’s friend and colleague, Shazza, in the film Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Callis was born in London, England, on 4 March 1971. His parents were both teachers. He has two older sisters. Callis was educated at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, London. He went on to study English at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.

After graduation, Callis worked in various theatre productions and television commercials. He made his film debut in the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. In 1998, he appeared in the British romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary as Shazza, Bridget’s (Renée Zellweger) friend and colleague.

From 2004 to 2009, Callis played the role of Dr. Gaius Baltar on the Sci-Fi Channel television series Battlestar Galactica. He also appeared in the spin-off series Caprica (2010-2011).

Callis has appeared in a number of other films and television series, including Drop the Dead Donkey (1990-1998), My Family (2000-2011), Spaced (1999-2001), and Doctor Who (2005).

Callis has been married to Australian actress Polly Walker since 1998. They have two daughters.
