Huey Pierce Long Jr. was born on August 30, 1893, in Winnfield, Louisiana. He was the seventh of nine children of Huey Pierce Long Sr., a former Confederate Army officer, and Caledonia Tison Long. His father was a landowner, lawyer, and state senator; his mother was a schoolteacher. Huey was educated in the public schools of Winnfield and Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1915 with a law degree.

Long began his political career as a state representative from Winn Parish, Louisiana. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1930 and served until his death in 1935. As senator, he advocated for the redistribution of wealth and the nationalization of industries. He also supported the repeal of Prohibition and the legalization of gambling.

Long was assassinated in 1935 by Dr. Carl Weiss, a political opponent. His death sparked a power struggle within the Louisiana Democratic Party, which was eventually won by his brother, Earl Kemp Long.
