Geoffrey Lewis was born in San Diego, California on July 31, 1935. His parents were both actors, and his sister is actress Juliette Lewis. He was educated at the prestigious Black Fox Military Academy, and later studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory in Los Angeles.

Lewis’ career began in the 1950s, with small roles in television shows such as “The Loretta Young Show” and “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. He also had a few film roles, including an appearance in the classic western “High Noon” (1952). In the 1960s, Lewis began to find more substantial work, appearing in such films as “The Sons of Katie Elder” (1965), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), and “True Grit” (1969). He also had a recurring role on the television series “Mannix” (1967-1975).
In the 1970s and 1980s, Lewis appeared in a number of popular films, including “Dirty Harry” (1971), “The Shootist” (1976), “Bronco Billy” (1980), and “Clint Eastwood’s The Dead Pool” (1988). He also had a recurring role on the television series “Falcon Crest” (1981-1990).
In recent years, Lewis has appeared in such films as “Mulholland Falls” (1996), “From Dusk Till Dawn” (1996), and “The Devil’s Rejects” (2005). He has also had guest roles on such television shows as “CSI: Miami” (2002) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2010).
Lewis has been married three times. His first wife was actress Pamela McMyler, with whom he had two daughters: actress Juliette Lewis and musician Lightfield Lewis. His second wife was actress Beverly D’Angelo, with whom he had one son: actor Dante Lewis. His third wife is actress Peggy Lipton, with whom he has two daughters: actresses Rashida Jones and Kidada Jones.
