Gail O’Grady (born January 23, 1963) is an American actress and producer. She is known for her roles on television. She has appeared in episodes of thirtysomething, NYPD Blue, ER, Boston Legal, The Guardian, American Dreams, and Desperate Housewives. She has also had leading roles in a number of made-for-television movies.

O’Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O’Grady, a financial planner. She has a brother, Sean. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois. O’Grady graduated from Wheaton Warrenville South High School in 1981. She attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She graduated from there in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

O’Grady began her career as a model for the Wilhelmina modeling agency. She made her television debut in an episode of the NBC daytime soap opera Santa Barbara in 1986. In 1991, she appeared in an episode of the CBS primetime soap opera Dallas. She also had guest roles on such television shows as Quantum Leap, Matlock, and L.A. Law.

In 1992, O’Grady was cast as Donna Abandando in the ABC police drama series NYPD Blue. She played the role for two seasons. In 1994, she appeared in the television movie A Friend to Die For, starring Kellie Martin. In 1995, she played the role of Carrie Fairchild in the ABC drama series Strange Luck.

In 1996, O’Grady was cast as Helen Pryor, the wife of Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney), in the NBC medical drama series ER. She appeared in the show for two seasons. In 1998, she starred in the made-for-television movie A Gun for Jennifer. In 1999, she played the role of Stacy Warner in the medical drama series House.

In 2000, O’Grady was cast as Janet Evanovich’s heroine Stephanie Plum in the made-for-television movie One for the Money. The movie was based on Evanovich’s novel of the same name. In 2001, she starred in the made-for-television movie The Wedding Dress, based on the best-selling novel by Danielle Steel.

In 2002, O’Grady was cast as Connie Rubirosa in the NBC legal drama series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She played the role for two seasons. In 2004, she starred in the made-for-television movie The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story, based on the book by Joe McGinniss.

In 2005, O’Grady was cast as Helen Gamble in the ABC legal drama series Boston Legal. She played the role for two seasons. In 2007, she starred in the made-for-television movie An American Crime, based on the book by Gail Boyer Hayes.

In 2008, O’Grady was cast as Maddie Hayes in the ABC comedy-drama series Miss Guided. The show was cancelled after one season. In 2009, she starred in the made-for-television movie A Mother’s Nightmare, based on the book by Ann Rule.

In 2010, O’Grady was cast as Nancy McNally in the ABC political drama series The West Wing. She played the role for two seasons. In 2012, she starred in the made-for-television movie Fatal Desire, based on the book by Ann Rule.

In 2013, O’Grady was cast as Bree Van de Kamp in the ABC comedy-drama series Desperate Housewives. She played the role for two seasons. In 2015, she starred in the made-for-television movie Secrets and Lies: The Amanda Knox Story, based on the book by Barbie Latza Nadeau.

O’Grady has been married three times: to actor Jeff Judkins from 1986 to 1993; to actor John Stamos from 1998 to 2005; and to producer Tom Verica from 2007 to 2013. She has two daughters: Olivia Judkins (born 1987) and Emma Rose Verica (born 2008).
