Fred Stolle was born in Adelaide, Australia, on July 26, 1938. His parents were both tennis players; his father had been a Davis Cup player for Australia. Stolle began playing tennis at an early age and soon showed great promise. He won the junior singles title at Wimbledon in 1956 and turned professional the following year.

Stolle had a successful career on the professional tennis circuit, winning 22 singles titles and 18 doubles titles. He was ranked in the top 10 in the world for six consecutive years, from 1963 to 1968. He reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon singles tournament in 1966 and 1967.

In 1968, Stolle married American actress Stefanie Powers. The couple had two children before divorcing in 1977.

In recent years, Stolle has worked as a tennis coach and commentator. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2002.
