Frankie Beverly (born Howard Beverly on December 6, 1946) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is the founder, lead singer, and primary songwriter of the R&B and soul group Maze. Beverly has written and produced numerous hits for the group, including the gold-selling singles “Workin’ Together”, “Happy Feelin’s”, and “Can’t Get Over You”.
Beverly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began his musical career as a drummer in the doo-wop group The Blenders. He later joined The Butlers, a local R&B band, with whom he toured the East Coast. After the group disbanded, Beverly relocated to San Francisco, where he formed Maze in 1970. The band enjoyed success with their debut album, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly, which spawned the hit single “While I’m Alone”.
Maze’s popularity increased with the release of their second album, Golden Time of Day, which featured the hit single “Happy Feelin’s”. The album peaked at number one on the Billboard R&B chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The band’s third album, Inspiration, was also a success, reaching number two on the R&B chart and being certified platinum by the RIAA.
Maze’s fourth album, Can’t Stop the Love, was released in 1985 and featured the hit single “Can’t Get Over You”. The album was certified gold by the RIAA. The band’s fifth album, Back to Basics, was released in 1986 and featured the hit single “Southern Girl”. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA.
Beverly has been married to his wife, Pamela, since 1971. The couple has two children: son Anthony and daughter India.
