Elizabeth Hawes was born in New York City on October 15, 1903. Her parents were both from wealthy families, and her father was a successful businessman. She had two brothers and one sister. She was educated at private schools in New York and Europe.
Hawes began her career as a fashion journalist, working for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. She later became a successful fashion designer, opening her own fashion house in New York in 1929. She designed clothes for both men and women, and her designs were known for their simplicity and elegance.
During her career, Hawes also wrote several books on fashion and design, including “Fashion is Spinach” (1938) and “The Dress Doctor” (1941).
Hawes was married three times. Her first husband was the American businessman William J. Donovan, with whom she had two sons. Her second husband was the British aristocrat Lord Charles Cavendish, with whom she had one daughter. Her third husband was the American businessman John Hay Whitney, with whom she had one son.
Hawes died of a heart attack in New York City on December 12, 1971.
