Donald Oliver is a retired American football player who was a offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for thirteen seasons. He played college football for the University of Houston, and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 1984 NFL Draft. Oliver won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, and also played for the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints.
Early Life
Donald Oliver was born on October 20, 1961, in Beaumont, Texas. He is the youngest of three children born to James and Sarah Oliver. His father was a factory worker, and his mother was a homemaker. Oliver’s older brother, James Jr., is a retired NFL linebacker, and his sister, Deborah, is a retired high school teacher.
Oliver began playing football in the fifth grade, and he played offensive tackle and defensive end in high school. He attended Hebert High School in Beaumont, where he was a two-time All-District selection. Oliver was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
After high school, Oliver attended the University of Houston, where he played football for the Cougars from 1980 to 1983. He was a two-time All-American and was named the Southwest Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior. Oliver graduated from Houston with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Career
Oliver was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played thirteen seasons in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls with the 49ers (Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV). Oliver also played for the Minnesota Vikings (1987-1988) and the New Orleans Saints (1989-1996). He retired from football after the 1996 season.
Oliver was named to the Pro Bowl four times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1989) and was named a first-team All-Pro four times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1989). He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
