Irrera was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Italian American parents. His father was a police officer and his mother was a homemaker. Irrera has two sisters. He was raised in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, Pennsylvania.
Irrera graduated from Bishop Egan High School in 1976. He then attended Penn State University, where he studied marketing. After college, Irrera moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. He has been performing stand-up comedy for over 35 years.
