Dez Dickerson (born August 5, 1961) is an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist of Prince and The Revolution.
Dickerson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father was a jazz trumpeter and his mother was a singer. He has two sisters. Dickerson was exposed to music at an early age and began playing the guitar when he was 12 years old. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied music and played in a number of bands.
Dickerson met Prince in 1978 and joined his band, The Revolution, in 1979. He appeared on Prince’s albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), 1999 (1982), Purple Rain (1984) and Around the World in a Day (1985). He also appeared in the films Purple Rain (1984) and Under the Cherry Moon (1986).
Dickerson left Prince and The Revolution in 1986 and pursued a solo career. He has released three solo albums: Dez Dickerson (1987), Eye 2 Eye (1989) and Dez Who? (1991). He has also produced albums for other artists, including Mavis Staples and George Clinton.
