Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr. (born June 9, 1957), better known as T. D. Jakes, is an American pastor, author and filmmaker. He is the founder and senior pastor of The Potter’s House, a non-denominational American megachurch. Jakes’s church services and evangelistic sermons are broadcast on The Potter’s Touch, which airs on Lightsource.com, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Black Entertainment Television, the Daystar Television Network and The Word Network. Central to Jakes’s work is the theme of deliverance from “hurting to healing, from poverty to prosperity”.[1]

Early Life

Jakes was born in South Charleston, West Virginia, on June 9, 1957, to Ernest Jakes Sr. and Odith Jakes (née Blake). He is the fourth of twelve children born to his parents, who were both Pentecostal preachers. His father was also a coal miner. Jakes’ father later became a bishop in the Church of God in Christ. Jakes’ mother used her position as first lady of the church to establish a daycare center, a food pantry, and a clothing bank.

Jakes was educated in the public schools of West Virginia and received his high school diploma from Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College. He then attended West Virginia State University on a football scholarship. He transferred to Marshall University after one year and then dropped out altogether to start a janitorial business.

Career

In 1982, Jakes founded The Potter’s House Church in Montgomery, Alabama. The church grew rapidly, and by 1987 it had outgrown its facilities and moved to Dallas, Texas. In 2010, the church had an estimated 30,000 members.

Jakes is also the CEO of TDJ Enterprises, a film and television production company. His films include Woman Thou Art Loosed (2004), Sparkle (2012), and Heaven Is for Real (2014). He has also produced several stage plays, including The Woman Who Wasn’t There (2002) and Sarah’s Choice (2009).

In addition to his work as a pastor and filmmaker, Jakes is also an author. He has written more than 40 books, including the best-selling Can You Stand to Be Blessed? (1996) and Maximize the Moment (2007).

Personal Life

Jakes is married to Serita Jakes, with whom he has five children: Thomas Dexter Jr., Jamar Jakes, Sarah Jakes Roberts, Cora Jakes Coleman, and Jacob Jakes. He also has three grandchildren.

Jakes has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. In 2014, he underwent surgery to have a tumor removed from his kidney.
