Rudy is an American sports film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an inspirational true story about the life of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It stars Sean Astin as Rudy, Ned Beatty as Rudy’s father, and Rob Brown as D-Bob, Rudy’s best friend.

Rudy was born on August 23, 1948, in Joliet, Illinois, to blue-collar parents, Daniel and Ann Ruettiger. He was the fifth of seven children and grew up in a working-class, Catholic family. His father was a mill worker and his mother was a homemaker. Rudy’s early education took place at Sacred Heart Academy, a local Catholic school.

Despite his small stature (he was just 5’6″ and weighed 165 pounds), Rudy dreamed of playing football at Notre Dame. He was rejected by the school’s football program three times before finally being accepted as a walk-on player in 1974. Rudy saw limited playing time during his college career, but he did manage to sack the University of Georgia’s quarterback during his final game.

After graduation, Rudy worked for a time as a motivational speaker. He also had a brief stint in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, but he was cut from the team during training camp. In 1993, Rudy’s story was made into a film starring Sean Astin. The film was a box office success, grossing over $22 million.

Rudy has been married twice. His first marriage, to Linda Hollenbeck, ended in divorce. He has three children from that marriage: Jamie, Daniel, and Erin. Rudy married his second wife, Cheryl Yantis, in 1992. The couple has one son together, Riley.

Rudy is now retired and living in California with his family. His net worth is estimated to be $5 million.
