Richard Rainwater was born on October 11, 1944, in Fort Worth, Texas, to parents Bert and Ruth Rainwater. He has two older sisters, Bertie and Nancy. He then attended Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1966.

Rainwater’s career began in 1966 when he went to work for his father’s accounting firm. In 1971, he left the accounting firm to form his own investment company, Rainwater Inc.
