Rainwater’s father was an accountant and his mother was a homemaker. Rainwater’s early education took place at the Fort Worth public schools. He then attended Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1966.
Rainwater’s career began in 1966 when he went to work for his father’s accounting firm. In 1971, he left the accounting firm to form his own investment company, Rainwater Inc. In 1976, he formed the Bass Brothers Investment Partnership with brothers Sid and Lee Bass. Through this partnership, Rainwater made his first major investment, buying a controlling interest in the Bass family’s oil and gas company, Plains Exploration & Production Company.
Rainwater’s investment career took off in the 1980s. He made a series of successful investments in various companies, including Columbia Pictures, Gulfstream Aerospace, and The Walt Disney Company. By the early 1990s, Rainwater had amassed a fortune of over $1 billion.
In 1991, Rainwater formed the investment partnership known as The Richard Rainwater Company. Through this partnership, he made a series of investments in various companies, including Texaco, Columbia/HCA, and Enron. By the early 2000s, Rainwater’s net worth had grown to over $3 billion.
In recent years, Rainwater has focused his philanthropic efforts on education and healthcare. He is a major donor to his alma mater, Stanford University, and has also given millions of dollars to various healthcare organizations.
Rainwater is married to Darla Moore, a businesswoman and philanthropist. The couple has two children.
