Paul Shaffer is an American musician, actor, voice actor, author, comedian, and game show host. He is best known for being the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with David Letterman from its inception in 1993 until his departure in 2015.
Shaffer was born on November 28, 1949, in Fort William, Ontario, Canada, the son of Shirley (née Levine) and Bernard Shaffer, a lawyer. He has a younger brother named Richard. Shaffer was raised in a Jewish family. He attended Westdale Secondary School and then McMaster University, where he studied jazz and music.
Shaffer’s first professional gig was as a member of the house band for The Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour, a Canadian television variety show that aired on CBC Television in the early 1970s. He later became musical director for the show’s successor, The David Letterman Show (1980–1982), which aired on NBC.
In 1982, Shaffer made his first appearance on Late Night with David Letterman as a featured musician. He would go on to become the show’s musical director and bandleader, a position he held until Letterman’s retirement in 2015.
Shaffer has also appeared in numerous films and television shows as an actor and voice actor. His most notable roles include playing himself in This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Frank Sinatra Jr. in The Blues Brothers (1980), and Leon Spinks in Back to the Future Part II (1989).

Shaffer has been married twice. His first marriage was to Cathy Vasapoli, with whom he has two daughters, Victoria and Elizabeth. His second marriage is to Caroline Hirsch, co-founder of the New York Comedy Festival.
