Om Puri was an Indian actor who appeared in mainstream Indian films, as well as independent and art films. He was born in Ambala, Haryana, on 18 October 1950. His father worked in the Indian Army, and his mother was a homemaker. He had two brothers and a sister. Puri’s father died when he was just three years old, and his mother had to raise the family on her own.
Puri graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in 1973. He began his career in television, appearing in various serials. He made his film debut in 1976 with the Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal. Puri went on to appear in several Hindi films, such as Ardh Satya (1982), Aakrosh (1980), and Maachis (1996). He also appeared in international films, such as My Son the Fanatic (1997) and East Is East (1999).
Puri won several awards for his work, including the National Film Award for Best Actor for Ardh Satya and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award.
Puri was married to Seema Kapoor, with whom he had a son, Ishaan. The couple divorced in 2005. Puri died of a heart attack on 6 January 2017.
