May Britt (born 22 March 1934) is a Swedish actress. She began her film career in Sweden, appearing in a number of Ingmar Bergman’s films. She moved to the United States in the early 1960s, where she appeared in such films as The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
Britt was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Anna (née Söderström), a social worker, and Sven Ake Viktor Johansson, a journalist. She had a sister, Ingrid, who was also an actress. Britt studied acting at the Dramatens elevskola, the Royal Dramatic Theatre’s acting school.
Britt’s first film role was in Bergman’s Smiles of a Summer Night (1955). She went on to appear in a number of Bergman’s films, including The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), and The Magician (1958). In 1960, she moved to the United States to star in The Magnificent Seven.
Britt’s other American films include The Great Escape (1963), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), and Mackenna’s Gold (1969). She returned to Sweden in the 1970s, appearing in such films as Cries and Whispers (1972) and Scenes from a Marriage (1973).
In the 1980s, Britt appeared in a number of American television movies and miniseries, including North and South (1985) and Ellis Island (1984).
Britt has been married three times. Her first husband was actor Harry Belafonte, with whom she had one daughter, Shari Belafonte. Her second husband was actor Roger Smith, with whom she had two sons, Anthony and Robert. She has been married to actor Ingvar Kamprad since 2006.
