Maceo Parker is an American funk and soul jazz saxophonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, as well as Parliament-Funkadelic in the 1970s. Maceo has also worked with Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bootsy Collins and Ani DiFranco. He has been described as “the most famous living saxophonist” by The Guardian.

Born in Kinston, North Carolina, Parker was a musical prodigy, playing alto saxophone in his school band at the age of eight. He later switched to tenor saxophone and played in the high school band. His father was a preacher and his mother was a singer, and both exposed him to a wide range of music. Parker began his professional career in the early 1950s, playing R&B with bands such as The Jive Bombers and The Blue Notes. He joined James Brown’s band in 1964, and quickly became one of the most important members of Brown’s “soul machine”.

Parker’s signature style – a mix of staccato phrasing and long, melodic lines – was an important part of Brown’s sound, and can be heard on hits such as “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and “I Got You (I Feel Good)”. Parker also played a major role in the development of Brown’s famous “funk” sound. In the 1970s, Parker left Brown’s band to join George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic. He continued to tour and record with Clinton until the early 2000s.

Parker has been awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and is a member of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. He has released several solo albums and continues to tour internationally.

1You know what? I love people. I really do. To a point where I almost can't stand to watch the news because if I see something happen to somebody, it almost feels as if it's happening to somebody in my family or somebody I know. I'm really sensitive, but I don't have a cocoon I can just hide into. That's why I enjoy going around the world doing what I do, and I try to say 'love" as much as possible. A lot of artists say 'love', but I really try to have people learn to love themselves and love each other. You know what I mean?
