Liz J. Patterson (born December 18, 1941) is an American politician. She was the first woman to represent South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives and the first woman from South Carolina to be elected to Congress.
Patterson was born in Greenville, South Carolina, the daughter of Elizabeth (née Johnson) and James Patterson. She graduated from Furman University in 1963 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1966. She was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1966.
Patterson began her political career as a staff member for U.S. Representative James Mann. She was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1974, serving until she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986. She served in the House from 1987 to 1993.
In Congress, Patterson served on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee on Ways and Means. She was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Patterson did not seek re-election to the House in 1992, instead running for the U.S. Senate. She was defeated in the Democratic primary by incumbent Senator Ernest Hollings.
After her time in Congress, Patterson worked as a lobbyist and consultant.
Patterson is divorced and has two children.
