Lindsey Nelson was born on May 25, 1919, in Pulaski, Tennessee, the son of a newspaper editor and publisher. He was educated at Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Nelson began his broadcasting career in Nashville in 1946, and soon moved to New York, where he worked as a sportscaster for NBC Radio and television. He became one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting, calling baseball, football, and golf for NBC. He also served as the play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets from their inception in 1962 until his retirement in 1995.
Nelson was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1985. He died on June 10, 1995, at the age of 76.
