Born in Houston, Texas, and raised in a strict Christian household, Luckett first sang in her local Baptist church as a child. She also took part in various local talent shows and performing arts events, and she studied acting at the Houston School for the Performing Arts. Her big break came when she was chosen to be a member of Destiny’s Child in 1993. With the group, she enjoyed success with several hit records and toured the world.
After leaving Destiny’s Child in 2000, Luckett released her self-titled debut album in 2006. The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It produced the hit single “Torn”, which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She followed up with a second album, Lady Love (2009), which debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles “Not Anymore” and “She Ain’t Got… Nothing on Me”.
Outside of her music career, Luckett has appeared in various films and television shows. In 2009, she made her acting debut in the romantic comedy film Precious Cargo. She has also appeared in episodes of American Dreams (2002), Friday Night Lights (2006), and Rosewood (2015).
Luckett was born on March 11, 1981, in Houston, Texas. She grew up in a strict Christian household in the city’s Fifth Ward area. Her father, who was also a minister, recognized her vocal ability when she was five years old and encouraged her to pursue a singing career. Luckett’s mother died when she was eight years old, after which she was raised by her paternal grandmother.
As a teenager, Luckett joined various local singing competitions and performing arts events. She also studied acting at the Houston School for the Performing Arts. In 1993, she auditioned for a girl group that would later become Destiny’s Child. She was selected as one of the four members of the group, alongside Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and LaTavia Roberson.
With Destiny’s Child, Luckett enjoyed success with several hit records and toured the world. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 1998 and peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. It was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold more than eight million copies worldwide. The album spawned the hit singles “No, No, No” and “With Me”.
The group’s second album, The Writing’s on the Wall, was released in 1999 and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. It was certified six times platinum by the RIAA and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. The album spawned the hit singles “Bills, Bills, Bills”, “Jumpin’, Jumpin'”, “Say My Name”, and “Bug a Boo”.
In 2000, Luckett left Destiny’s Child after disagreements with manager Matthew Knowles. She was replaced by Michelle Williams.
After leaving Destiny’s Child, Luckett signed a solo recording contract with Capitol Records. She began working on her self-titled debut album in 2002 but its release was delayed due to disagreements with her label. The album was eventually released in 2006 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It was certified platinum by the RIAA and sold more than one million copies in the United States. The album’s lead single, “Torn”, peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Luckett’s second album, Lady Love, was released in 2009 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 chart. It sold more than one million copies worldwide but was less successful than her debut album. The album’s lead single, “Not Anymore”, peaked at number 54 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Outside of her music career, Luckett has appeared in various films and television shows. In 2009, she made her acting debut in the romantic comedy film Precious Cargo. She has also appeared in episodes of American Dreams (2002), Friday Night Lights (2006), and Rosewood (2015).
Luckett is married to Tommicus Walker and they have two children together: a daughter named Gianna Iman Walker and a son named Tommicus Jr.
