Kathryn Erbe is an American actress, best known for her role as Detective Alexandra Eames on the NBC crime drama series Law & Order: Criminal Intent. She has also starred in the HBO series Oz, the Showtime series The Sopranos, and the USA Network series In Plain Sight.
Erbe was born in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Elaine (née Mardiney) and Paul E. Erbe, a retired high school guidance counselor. She has two sisters, Karen and Julia. Erbe was raised in a Catholic family of Irish and Italian descent. She graduated from Newton North High School in 1985, and then attended Northwestern University, where she studied theatre.
Erbe began her acting career in regional theater productions. She made her Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning play The Heidi Chronicles in 1989. Her other Broadway credits include The Grapes of Wrath (1991) and The Sisters Rosensweig (1992).
Erbe made her television debut in the NBC drama series Law & Order in 1991. She went on to play the role of Detective Alexandra Eames on the spin-off series Law & Order: Criminal Intent from 2001 to 2011. Erbe also starred in the HBO series Oz from 1997 to 2003, and had recurring roles on the Showtime series The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007, and the USA Network series In Plain Sight from 2008 to 2012.
Erbe has starred in a number of films, including What About Bob? (1991), The Village (2004), and The Happening (2008).
Erbe is married to actor Terry O’Quinn. They have two sons, Riley and Connor.
