Jonathan Cain is an American musician and songwriter, best known for his work with the rock band Journey. He has also played with Bad English and The Babys.
Cain was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 26, 1950. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a homemaker. Cain has two older sisters. He was exposed to music at an early age, and began playing the piano when he was five years old. He attended Catholic schools growing up.
Cain began his professional music career in the 1970s, playing in various bands including The Babys and Bad English. He joined Journey in 1980, and has been with the band ever since. Cain has co-written some of Journey’s most popular songs, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Who’s Crying Now,” and “Open Arms.”
Cain’s work with Journey has made him one of the most successful songwriters in rock music. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017.
Cain has been married three times. His first marriage was to model Karen Carlson, with whom he had two daughters, Natasha and Ashley. His second marriage was to Sue Ennis, a former member of the band Heart. Cain has been married to his third wife, Paula White, since 2015.
