John Gibbons is an American former professional baseball catcher and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, and Toronto Blue Jays. He also served as the Blue Jays’ manager from 2013 to 2018.

Gibbons was born in San Antonio, Texas, on May 8, 1961. He is the son of John and Barbara Gibbons. He has two sisters, Terri and Kathy. Gibbons attended MacArthur High School in San Antonio, where he played baseball and football. He then attended San Antonio Junior College and the University of Texas at Austin, where he played baseball.

Gibbons was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round of the 1981 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut with the Padres in 1984. He played for the Padres until 1987, when he was traded to the Houston Astros. He played for the Astros from 1987 to 1989. He was then traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he played from 1989 to 1990. He was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991. He played for the Blue Jays until he was released in 1995.

Gibbons began his managerial career in the Blue Jays’ farm system in 2001. He was promoted to the Blue Jays’ major league coaching staff in 2002. He served as the interim manager of the Blue Jays in 2004. He was then named the Blue Jays’ full-time manager in 2013. He served as the Blue Jays’ manager until 2018.

Gibbons has a career record of 1,296-1,362 as a manager. His teams have made the playoffs three times: in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Gibbons is married to Sharon Gibbons. They have three children: John Jr., Ashley, and Bradley.
