Jerome Murphy is an American football cornerback who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of South Florida.

Early Life

Jerome Murphy was born on September 8, 1987 in Miami, Florida. He is the son of Jerome Murphy Sr. and Deborah Murphy. He has two brothers, Jamal and Joshua, and one sister, Jasmine. Jerome Murphy Sr. was a running back at the University of Miami from 1984 to 1988.

Murphy attended Miami Carol City High School, where he played football and ran track. In football, he was a two-time All-Dade County selection and was named to the Miami Herald’s All-Broward County team as a senior. In track & field, Murphy competed as a sprinter and jumper. He ran personal-best times of 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.6 seconds in the 200-meter dash at the 2006 GMAC Invitational. He also had a personal-best jump of 6.73 meters (22 ft 1 in) in the long jump at the 2006 FHSAA 2A District 12 Meet.

College career

Murphy played college football at the University of South Florida from 2006 to 2009. As a freshman in 2006, he appeared in all 12 games and made one start. He finished the season with 19 tackles (15 solo) and two interceptions. As a sophomore in 2007, he started all 13 games and had 61 tackles (45 solo), two interceptions, and one sack.

As a junior in 2008, Murphy started all 13 games and had 73 tackles (52 solo), two interceptions, and one sack. He was named second-team All-Big East Conference. As a senior in 2009, he started all 13 games and had 58 tackles (42 solo), two interceptions, and one sack. He was named second-team All-Big East Conference for the second consecutive year.

Detroit Lions

Murphy was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the third round (65th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.[2] He was placed on injured reserve on September 4, 2011 with a knee injury.[3] He was released by the Lions on August 31, 2012.[4]
