Hjalmar Andersen (born September 26, 1923) is a retired Norwegian speed skater. He is a three-time Olympic champion and has been called “the greatest speed skater of all time”.
Andersen was born in Oslo, Norway. His parents were both speed skaters. Andersen began skating at the age of five. He started competing in speed skating at the age of eleven.
Andersen won his first Olympic gold medal in the 500 meter event at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo. He also won gold medals in the 1500 meter event at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo and the 1000 meter event at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley.
Andersen retired from speed skating after the 1960 Olympics. He was inducted into the International Speed Skating Hall of Fame in 1996.
Andersen has been married three times. His first wife was Inger Marie Gundersen, with whom he had two children. His second wife was Liv Ullmann, with whom he had one child. His third wife is Ingerid Stenseth.
Andersen currently lives in Oslo, Norway.
