Henry Kissinger was born on May 27, 1923, in Fürth, Germany. His parents, Louis and Paula Kissinger, were Jewish. He had two sisters, Vera and Walter. The family immigrated to the United States in 1938 to escape the Nazis. Kissinger attended public schools in New York City, graduating from George Washington High School in 1941. He then enrolled at City College of New York, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
Beautiful weather today. I drove around in the convertable while listening to Simon and Garfunkle.
— Henry Kissinger (@DrKissingerPhD) May 1, 2010
After the war, Kissinger returned to City College and graduated in 1948. He then went on to study at Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1954.
Kissinger’s academic career was interrupted once again by world events. In 1957, he was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency to work on Cold War intelligence matters. He served as a consultant to the National Security Council from 1969 to 1975.
In 1973, Kissinger was named Secretary of State by President Richard Nixon. He served in that position until 1977. During his tenure, he helped to negotiate the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt (the Camp David Accords) and normalize relations with China.
After leaving government service, Kissinger founded his own consulting firm, Kissinger Associates. He has also written several books on foreign policy and diplomacy.
Kissinger is married to Nancy Maginnes. They have two children, David and Elizabeth.
Kissinger has an estimated net worth of $20 million. His salary as a consultant is not publicly known, but it is likely that he earns millions of dollars per year.
