Henny Backus was born on December 10, 1917, in New York City, New York. Her parents were both vaudeville performers, and she made her stage debut at the age of three. She appeared in a number of Broadway shows as a child, including the Ziegfeld Follies and Earl Carroll’s Vanities. She also appeared in a number of films, including the Our Gang shorts and the Marx Brothers’ A Day at the Races (1937).
Backus’ career took off in the 1940s, when she began appearing in a number of popular radio programs, including The Jack Benny Program and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. She also appeared in a number of films, including It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) and Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948). In 1950, she married comedian Bob Hope, with whom she would appear in a number of films, including The Seven Little Foys (1954) and Call Me Bwana (1963).
Backus continued to work steadily throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in such films as The Love Bug (1968) and The Muppet Movie (1979). She also made guest appearances on a number of television shows, including The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. She retired from acting in the early 1980s.
Backus passed away on February 22, 2007, at the age of 89. At the time of her death, she was survived by her husband, Bob Hope, and their four children.
