George R. Roberts is an American businessman and co-founder of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), a leading global investment firm. He is also a philanthropist, and has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
George Roberts was born in Long Beach, California, on December 21, 1939, to parents who were both schoolteachers. He has two younger sisters. Roberts was an average student in school, but was very active in sports, playing both baseball and football. He graduated from high school in 1957, and then attended the University of California, Berkeley on a football scholarship. He played on the Berkeley football team for two years before he was injured and had to give up the sport.
Roberts graduated from Berkeley in 1961 with a degree in business administration. He then went to work for a small accounting firm in Los Angeles. In 1962, he met Henry Kravis, who was also working in the accounting industry. The two men became friends and business partners, and in 1966 they founded KKR.
Since its inception, KKR has grown to become one of the largest and most successful investment firms in the world. Under Roberts’ and Kravis’ leadership, KKR has completed some of the largest and most complex leveraged buyouts in history. These include the $25 billion buyout of RJR Nabisco in 1988, which is still the largest leveraged buyout ever completed.
In addition to his work at KKR, Roberts is also a philanthropist. He and his wife, Julia, have donated millions of dollars to charitable causes, including education, health care, and the arts. They have also established the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund, which provides financing and support to small businesses in underserved communities.
George Roberts is married to Julia Ann Roberts. They have three children: David, John, and Elizabeth.
