Frank William Abagnale, Jr. (born April 27, 1948) is an American former confidence trickster, check forger, and impostor who assumed no fewer than eight identities as he traversed the country over the course of five years in the 1960s. He is currently the security consultant for the FBI Academy and lectures at over 400 colleges and universities around the world.
Early Life
Abagnale was born in Bronxville, New York. His father, Frank Abagnale, Sr., was an aspiring writer and occasional professional con man; his mother, Paulette, was a French-born former airline stewardess. Abagnale Sr. left his family when his son was 12 years old, leaving young Frank to be raised by his mother and older sister, Diane.
Abagnale’s father’s abandonment and his mother’s subsequent marriage to a man who regularly physically abused both her and Frank Jr. had a profound effect on the young boy, who began running away from home at the age of 13. He would eventually drop out of high school at age 16 to begin his life of crime.
Career
Abagnale’s criminal career began with check fraud. He would forge checks in his father’s name and cash them at local banks. When his father discovered the scheme, he contacted the FBI, which began tracking his son’s movements.
At age 18, Abagnale posed as a Pan Am pilot and flew over 1.5 million miles on more than 250 flights before he was finally caught in France and returned to the United States. He then posed as a doctor and practiced medicine for a short time before being caught and serving time in a Georgia prison.
After his release from prison, Abagnale began working as a security consultant for the FBI. He has since lectured at over 400 colleges and universities around the world on the subject of fraud prevention.
