Abagnale was born in Bronxville, New York. His father, Frank Abagnale, Sr., was an aspiring writer and occasional professional con man; his mother, Paulette, was a French-born former airline stewardess. Abagnale Sr. left his family when his son was 12 years old, leaving young Frank to be raised by his mother and older sister, Diane.

Abagnale’s father’s abandonment and his mother’s subsequent marriage to a man who regularly physically abused both her and Frank Jr. had a profound effect on the young boy, who began running away from home at the age of 13.
