Ed Koch was born in the Bronx, New York on December 12, 1924. His parents, Yetta (née Dine) and Louis Koch, were Jewish immigrants from U.S.S.R. Koch had a sister, Miriam, and a brother, Robert. Koch was raised in a Jewish household and attended public schools, graduating from the Bronx High School of Science in 1941. He then enrolled at City College of New York, but his studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Army. After the war, Koch returned to CCNY and graduated in 1945 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Citizens, it is to cry that Albany is left high and dry by its reputed guardians.

Koch began his political career as a Democrat, working as an assistant to New York City councilman William Rapfogel. He later served as a campaign manager for Robert F. Kennedy’s successful Senate campaign in 1964. In 1968, Koch ran for and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 17th congressional district. He served in the House for nine terms, from 1969 to 1977. During his time in Congress, Koch gained a reputation as a liberal Democrat and an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War.
In 1977, Koch ran for and was elected mayor of New York City. He served three terms as mayor, from 1978 to 1989. During his time as mayor, Koch oversaw the city’s recovery from the fiscal crisis of the 1970s and helped make New York a safer and more livable city. He also helped revitalize the city’s economy and attract businesses and investment to New York. Koch was widely popular as mayor, and was reelected to office by wide margins in 1981 and 1985.
In 1989, Koch ran for reelection but was defeated by David Dinkins. After leaving office, Koch remained active in politics and public policy. He served as a visiting professor at Columbia University and New York University, and wrote a column for The New York Daily News. He also worked as an adviser to several corporations and organizations.
Koch died on February 1, 2013 at the age of 88.
During his lifetime, Koch was married twice. His first marriage, to Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Platt, ended in divorce. Koch married his second wife, Bess Myerson, in 1976. The couple divorced in 1982. Koch had no children from either marriage.
Koch was 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 m) tall and weighed 160 pounds (73 kg) during his time as mayor. He was known for his distinctive gravelly voice.
