Diana Krall, OC, OBC is a Canadian jazz pianist and singer, known for her contralto vocals. She has sold more than 6 million albums in the US and over 15 million worldwide. Her album The Look of Love was nominated for five Grammy Awards, and she has won three. Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, she has won five Grammy Awards and eight Juno Awards. She has also earned nine gold, three platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall was born on November 16, 1964, in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, the daughter of Adella A. (Wasserman), an elementary school teacher, and Stephen James “Jim” Krall, an accountant. Her father played piano and guitar, and her mother sang in a community choir. Krall’s father was an amateur drummer who encouraged his daughter to play piano. Krall took up piano herself at the age of four. She took jazz piano lessons from Ray Sikora in Vancouver when she was eight years old. At age fourteen, she began writing her own songs. She later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston on a scholarship. After graduating in 1986, she moved to Los Angeles to play jazz. She returned to Canada to release her first album in 1993.
