David W. Harper is an American actor, best known for his role as Jim Egan on the television series Knots Landing from 1979 to 1993. He has also appeared in films such as The China Syndrome, The Hunter, and The Right Stuff.
Harper was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of Mary Frances (née Bowman) and Howard Eugene Harper. He has two brothers, Robert and John. Harper attended Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso) and the University of New Mexico.
Harper’s acting career began in the early 1970s with guest appearances on such television shows as The Virginian, Gunsmoke, and Marcus Welby, M.D.. His first film role was in the 1974 disaster film The Towering Inferno. He gained wider recognition for his role as Jim Egan on Knots Landing, which he played from 1979 to 1993.
During his time on Knots Landing, Harper also appeared in such films as The China Syndrome (1979), The Hunter (1980), and The Right Stuff (1983).
Since leaving Knots Landing, Harper has had guest roles on such television shows as JAG, Touched by an Angel, and CSI: Miami. He has also appeared in the films The Pelican Brief (1993), The Client (1994), and Absolute Power (1997).
Harper has been married to actress Lindsay Wagner since 1974. They have two children: son Brendan (born 1976) and daughter Taylor (born 1983).
