Dan L. Duncan (born November 29, 1933) is an American businessman and philanthropist. Duncan was born in Houston, Texas, the son of Jeanette Duncan (née McConn) and Dan Duncan Sr. He has three sisters: Dannette, Janice, and Nancy. His father was an electrician and his mother was a homemaker. Duncan attended Milby High School in Houston. He then enrolled at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he studied business administration and played basketball. He left Lamar after one year to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he served for two years.
After his discharge from the Army, Duncan returned to Houston and began his career in the oil and gas industry as a roustabout for Gulf Oil Corporation. He later worked as a pipeline inspector for Gulf Coast Pipeline Company and as a salesman for Enterprise Products Company, a small pipeline operator founded by his father-in-law, O.S. “Bud” Adams.
In 1968, Duncan and Adams founded Enterprise Products Partners L.P., which today is one of the largest publicly traded partnerships and a leading North American provider of midstream energy services. Duncan has served as chairman of the board of Enterprise GP Holdings L.P., the general partner of Enterprise Products Partners L.P., since its inception in 2001.
Duncan is also the chairman of the board of directors of Enterprise Products Holdings L.L.C., a wholly owned subsidiary of Enterprise GP Holdings L.P. that owns all of the outstanding common units of Enterprise Products Partners L.P. not owned by Enterprise GP Holdings L.P. or its affiliates.
In addition to his business interests, Duncan is a philanthropist who has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to charitable causes, including education, health care, and the arts. He is a trustee of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and a member of the board of directors of The Houston Grand Opera.
