Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer, organist, conductor, and pianist of the Romantic era. His most famous works include “The Carnival of the Animals”, “Danse macabre”, ” Samson and Delilah”, and “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso”. He is also known for his opera “Samson et Dalila”.

Saint-Saëns was born on October 9, 1835, in Paris, France. His father, Claude-Louis Saint-Saëns, was a French government official, and his mother, Marie-Laurence (née Masson) Saint-Saëns, was a gifted amateur pianist. Saint-Saëns had two younger brothers: Henri, who died at the age of two, and Édouard, who became a doctor.

Saint-Saëns began piano lessons at the age of two and a half. He composed his first piece of music, “The Elephant”, at the age of five. At the age of ten, he gave his first public performance as a pianist.

Saint-Saëns studied at the Paris Conservatory from 1848 to 1851. His teachers included François-Joseph Fétis, Fromental Halévy, and Pierre Zimmermann. Saint-Saëns won the Conservatory’s first prize for piano in 1850 and the second prize for organ in 1851.

Saint-Saëns’s professional career began as an organist at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris. He later held positions as an organist at the Church of Saint-Sulpice and the Church of Saint-Merri. He also served as the official organist for the Paris Conservatory from 1858 to 1877.

Saint-Saëns’s compositional output includes works for orchestra, chamber music, opera, vocal music, and piano. His best-known works include “The Carnival of the Animals”, “Danse macabre”, ” Samson and Delilah”, and “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso”.

Saint-Saëns was married twice. His first wife was Marie Truffot, with whom he had one son, André. His second wife was Pauline Viardot, a famous singer and composer. The couple had three children: Claude, Jean, and Pablo.

Saint-Saëns died on December 16, 1921, in Algiers, Algeria. He was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
